Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first year teacher trying to reach out and grab my students. I teach 7th and 8th grade reading in a low-socioeconomic area. A majority of the students are learning English as their second language and it is a very hard concept for them.

Many of my students do not have the resources to go out and buy all of the school supplies necessary to have a successful school year. Furthermore, many of their parents are single working parents, or households where parents are working more than one job. This does not allow the students to be exposed to all of the vocabulary and writing that they need.

I would like 150 composition notebooks, one for each student. I want to start a dialog journal between myself and the students. My hope is that the students will pick up on the vocabulary and writing style that I use and they will apply it in their writing. They will be able to see formal and correct writing in an informal activity. I also hope this will boast my students confidence to take risks in class.

Your will make it possible for my students to become successful writers and readers. This will only add to the society as many of they will gain the confidence to attain goal such as college.
