A Child's Perspective Of War: The Boy In The Striped Pajamas

My students need a class set of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas to explore a unit on World War II from a child's perspective.

I teach sixth grade students in rural Alabama. My students are in their first year at the middle school -- a time of change, responsibility, and growth. We are a Title I school serving students grade 6-8.

In this developmental stage, students are often hard to reach -- and especially hard to bridge the understanding gap between tragic history and present day with its technological advances. But, as famously spoken by many, those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. That is why I would like to emphasis the tragedy of World War II through a unique book that shows the horrors through the perspective of a child. By presenting this war through a child's eyes, students will identify with the narrator and gain personal insight to the war that changed the world.

I am requesting a class set of books of the bestseller, "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas". With this set, we will explore World War II from a child's perspective. In this insightful but heartbreaking book, Bruno learns the truth about his father's position within the Nazi Army as he meets a friend through a concentration camp fence... the boy in the striped pajamas. Through this book study, students will learn the tragic truth of World War II and the fences that exist to divide us all. In addition to a book study, we will host an event in which students will dress in striped pajamas and experience life as a resident of a concentration camp. By providing this funding, you are providing the entire sixth grade class with an experience far beyond that of a book study.

Your generous donation will allow our sixth graders to experience life during World War II. This learning experience will last a lifetime and bring home the tragedy of war. This lesson will extend beyond the classroom -- provoking thought and reflection on humankind.
