I am in my seventh year of teaching art to a very challenging group of special needs students from the most economically depressed neighborood in the city. My students face many challenges and most live in extreme poverty. My middle school pupils have all been clinically diagnosed as "Severely Emotionly Disturbed" and many have other learning disabilities including ADHD. Many of these children have very difficult home life's and are forced to deal with many problems within their communities including poor infrastructures and services, cramped housing, vermin, gang and drug violence, every type of abuse, and a high assault, rape, and homicide rate. Surprisingly these students rarely leave the block they live on and venture into other parts of the city just minutes away by subway train. Taking these kids on field trips is a feeling of fulfillment that is difficult to describe. Each trip is truly a transformation for these students as they gain an awareness of other cultural possibilities. One of my favorite places to take them is the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Central Park. The trip consists of taking a select amount of students and guiding them through the vast museum and stopping to do sketches of objects or paintings of their choice. Not only are these students engaged with great art objects, but they develop focusing skills that will translate across all content areas and slowly counter their ADHD tendencies. I always have a good amount of artistically talented students and I would love to provide them with quality fine art materials. The art budget was drastically cut this school year and materials such as sketchbooks and pencil kits would greatly enhance the student's experience at the museum. What may seem like a small thing to many of us will make a huge difference for these students and aid them in understanding the world around them. Thank you for help, it is greatly appreciated.
