Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a classroom teacher for kindergarten students. I teach in a high-need Title I school.

Have you ever heard the expression that all you need to know in life you learned in kindergarten? As silly as this sounds, the basics of this are so true! Kindergarten is such an important year in the lives of children. They are such formative years that are the building blocks for the young men and women we become.

Kindergarten students learn phonemic awareness and how to stretch out sounds in words by hearing and writing the sounds in words. By turning the kitchen into a pretend restaurant, students can role play that they have specific jobs in the restaurant like hostess, server, cooks, managers, and dish washers. Students use their alphabet and sound knowledge by creating signs for the restaurant, writing the words on the menu, and by the servers writing down the customers' orders of what they would like to eat. Our school has a high population of English language learners. Role playing encourages language development and cooperative learning. Math skills in the kitchen/restaurant include counting, measuring, and understanding money.

By helping to fund a nice quality kitchen set, you are investing in the lives of kindergarten students for many years to come. The kitchen set lends itself to not only dramatic play but spans through all areas of the curriculum like oral language development, phonemic awareness, math skills, and social studies.
