Continued Learning Builds a Better and Brighter Classroom

I need to attend the National Science Teachers Association National Conference to allow me to learn about the newest national standards that will be implemented in my science classrooms.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach biology, physics and chemistry at an urban inner-city Math, Art, Science and Tech Magnet, with classrooms consisting of a wonderful mix of many different cultures and backgrounds coming together to learn science. My classroom students consist of immigrant ESL students, special education, and gifted/high achieving students, many of whom come from economically challenging backgrounds.

The majority of my magnet students travel over an hour every day to and from school on the bus coming from all parts of Los Angeles to get a better education than their local schools offer.

This alone shows the dedication these students have to bettering their lives.

When I walk into my classroom, I’m excited to see my students and teach them the topics of chemistry, biology and physics through experiments and engaging activities that help them learn the difficult concepts of science. These hands-on activities allow students to experience science instead of only listening to lectures.

My Project

The purpose of attending the National Science Conference is to bring my students the most current methods of teaching science. The conference will help me thoroughly understand the new framework of science standards and deliver it to my students. This new framework incorporates several new ways of making sure students are using writing, investigations and engineering during their learning experience. Attending the workshop will give me new ideas on how to deliver these expectations to the students.

The conference will also provide ideas and techniques on how to train students to be better science writers while also giving insight on how to connect the teaching of science with technology, engineering, art, and math.

Having an integrated approach to these concepts will allow me to better prepare my students for their future in possible academic studies and choices in majors that lead to careers in science.
