Mrs. C. Wright Middle School
Abbeville, SC Grades 6-8

Our rural middle school in South Carolina has only two 7th grade science classes. I am one of the two teachers of those classes. My 94 students have a wide range of talents and abilities but limited experiences due to high levels of poverty in our area.

The major obstacles in our school include decreased state funding for education this year and low levels of student motivation. Even though we are cutting corners in many areas, we continue to work together to increase student achievement in all academic areas. With these things in mind, my students began the year with a challenge - to "Go Green and Gold." A major theme of 7th grade science is about ENERGY, emphasizing the three R's - REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE.

With the Olympics in China concluding during our first week of school, students were asked GO GREEN and to bring in old CD's to reuse. The reused CD's would become a GOLD medal for each one to wear. After writing their names on each "GOLD medal," students were introduced to their first gold medalist, one they all knew, Michael Phelps. They discovered that his main motivation in breaking records and winning the GOLD was to "do his best." Then the idea of GOING FOR GOLD became a reality for my students. They would reach for the "gold" - academically, as they "go green." We need your help to continue the project.

Students want to know more about saving ENERGY as they hear more about it and practice it. So I want to continue. My students need recycled paper for newsletters to take home with our "GOING GREEN AND GOLD" ideas and activities. My students need recycled paper and ink for pictures of winners to be placed in our hall and class. These things will help increase their motivation to continue to excel academically and to learn about conservation of energy. Thank you for helping us "GO GREEN AND GOLD."
