Helping students want to come to school

My incentives program needs 2 iPods, assorted snacks and 3 flash drives.

Ms. F.
Grades 9-12

I am a graduation coach for a high school with a large at-risk student population. My job is to work with students to help them be successful and to graduate from high school. I work with all ages (9th-12th grade) and students with all different ability levels and obstacles. Some are coming back to school after having a baby. Others have been struggling in school for years. Still others have been great students until they have recently run into some type of obstacle. They all have one thing in common: they need some extra attention to help them succeed.

Imagine: You wake up in the morning to an alarm going off. Your mother has already left for work and you are home alone. You know you should get up and go to school. You know you have a quiz in your math class. You know if you don't go, you might be missing out on your only hot meal of the day. Then you think about how your teacher yelled at your class yesterday. How the kid who sits behind you in your 1st period always makes fun of your shoes. You know you can just turn off the alarm, go back to sleep and no one will notice, since your mom doesn't get home from work until after your school gets out. Do you really need to go to school today? Will anyone even notice that you're not there? What might inspire you to get out of bed?

By having incentives for my students, I can help outweigh the "cons" of coming to school. This semester, working with a very small group of students and a budget strictly from my own pocket, I have helped increase their daily attendance rate. By having great incentives, from candy to iPods, I can expand the group to a larger number of students and get the students really excited about coming to school.

Good school attendance has been directly linked to academic achievement, greater participation in school programs, and graduation from high school. For example, in Minneapolis, a recent study found that students who were in class 95 percent of the time were twice as likely to pass state language-arts tests as students with attendance rates of 85 percent. When officials of the Rochester, NY school district looked at attendance and achievement patterns, researchers found that students who had scored between 85 and 100 on the state English tests had attended school an average of 93 percent of the time. Students who scored below the 54th percentile had an 85 percent attendance rate. Your help will allow me to impact more students through attendance incentives, which will assist our students in being more successful in school.
