Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a class of eager to learn 3rd grade students in a low-income/high need school in Texas. The majority of my students are in the English as a Second Language program. For many of them, this is their first year of all English instruction. The students I am blessed with this year have a strong desire to learn English well and succeed in school.

A major issue in our class is that many of the students have a hard time seeing documents and examples being shown. Much of curriculum has very small text that is hard for children to see, especially those who sit towards the rear of the room. Students who need glasses frequently do not have them due to the financial situation at home. A major obstacle is showing specific reading strategies on small text passages as are often used for our state TAKS exam. Students often have a difficult time seeing exactly what I am trying to write.

The solution to this problem is a visual document projector. With this, I am able to place a document, such as a TAKS story, under the projector and zoom in on any part of the passage so that all the children can clearly see what is being shown (even the children in the back!) I can project a read-a-loud picture book, show the students how to fold origami, or even have the children show their own work on the projector.

Your can play a part in helping my students become successful students by enabling them clearly see everything their teacher is trying to show them. A projector allows all students in my class an opportunity to have a clear visual picture. These kids are enthusiastic and excited about learning. Your contribution can make that little “extra” difference between ordinary and extraordinary kids!
