I teach at a high school special education school. We have eight classes of students with autism, multiple handicaps and significant learning disabilities. All are working toward an IEP diploma. We recently established a vocational training program to assure that they will graduate with the experience necessary to find a job.

Our students are working hard at jobs throughout Manhattan. Some students are working in the laundry room of a local hotel, other students are helping at a pizza parlor, and students are working at a food pantry and others at a local library. So far, our program has been extremely successful. Our students are more excited and engaged; they feel a newfound sense of pride in their accomplishments. Their attendance has improved and they are always excited to talk about "what they did at work today". The skills they learn and the contacts they make will help them establish job opportunities after graduation. This is an extremely important program. In order to expand our vocational training program we need a system to track and organize where each student goes each day.

We came up with the idea of a student - run white board. We'll hang a white board next to the office in our unit and it will be each student's job to record where they go and who they go with each day. This system will make them accountable for their jobs and will help notify teachers, related service providers and friends as to where they are when they leave the building. To do this we will need a magnetic white board, magnets with labels and red, blue and green colored tape.

Your help will ensure that our vocational training program will continue to grow. It will give our students a chance to show off their new responsibility and will help hold them accountable for working at a real job.
