"There is very little funding for gifted education in Alabama. The materials we are able to purchase come from out pupil supply allocation which is often spent to cover cost of testing supplies to identify children in the gifted area. While the school in which I am housed has a library, there are not near enough resources for the unit I wish to teach.
My project is called "Time Trek." Students will travel back in time through a concept-based curriculum unit on the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, Rome and China. Students will look through these civilizations through the conceptual lenses of culture, conflict, and identity.
Students are usually not taught history in their classes using this method. Scholars say that teaching history to kids has many important benefits. History provides
identity. Studying history improves our decision making and judgment. History shows us models of good and responsible citizenship. History also teaches us how to
learn from the mistakes of others. History helps us understand change and societal development. History provides us a context from which to understand ourselves and others.
By funding this project, you will make it possible for my students to have print resources that would not be normally available to them.
My students need 16 resource books about Ancient China.
The cost of this proposal is $249, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ."

Dear Ron Fine Consulting Group, HUBERT PEI, Debra, ALLISON and Anonymous Donors,
This is just a small token of my gratitude for your generous donation to my classroom. The books on ancient China that you donated have helped my students learn about the cultures of another land. We've been using them to compare this ancient culture with others we have studied, including Greece, Rome, and Egypt.
When we opened the box of brand-new books, the students
were enormously excited.Because of the
nature of my classes, these books will be shared with not only my current
students, which numbers about fifty children from fifteen schools, but will be
available to my students in the future. It is not every day that our children receive such generosity. We genuinely appreciate your charitable
spirit.
Our school and city, as well as our entire state, are facing budget shortfalls in education, so without your help, my students would not have had these wonderful resources.
Without donors like you, thousands of classroom in the United States would go without adequate resources.
With gratitude, Mrs. F.

Dear Ron Fine Consulting Group, HUBERT PEI, Debra, ALLISON and Anonymous Donors,
Thank you so much for supporting my class by contributing to our Time Trek to China proposal. Your donation makes it possible to provide my students with significantly more resources than would normally be available to them. These books will help my students improve their connections to other cultures and how lessons learned from this ancient civilization can be applied to their lives.
Great news -- this project is now a reality! We ordered the materials and they were sent directly to the classroom.

"I gave to this project because it sounds like a very worthwhile project for Birmingham elementary students. Hope the children learn a lot about China and how to apply history to current situations."

"Thank you so much for donating to our project. Several people did not think that learning about ancient history would interest my 4th graders. However,I am amazed at the interest in our inner city children of the history of other people. They come to understand how we are in many ways more alike than different."
