I teach kindergarten because I want each child's first year in school to be one that instills self-confidence and a life-long joy for learning. I want learning to be fun! My kindergarten students learn through hands-on experiences which they consider to be play. While they think they are just playing and having fun, I know that they are learning to read and write and make sense of the world around them. I have a classroom of learners at all levels who need to be challenged in a variety of ways to spur each of them on to individual academic success.

Being a Title I school, there are certain obstacles that must be overcome so that our students can be successful. Many of the students do not have the extra support they need at home to help them master necessary skills for reading and writing like daily review of sight words or practice of reading strategies. The classroom environment must provide more independent practice time for those skills to help those students be successful. In literacy centers, students have the opportunity to choose activities for independent reading/writing practice.

My classroom is in need of a variety of reading and writing center activities to engage and challenge student learning. Young children need lots of fun and interactive experiences with games, puzzles, and writing activities. When they are playing with beginning sound puzzles or writing their sight words on dry erase boards, they are busy at work learning to read and write. Literacy centers provide that much needed daily practice with a variety of activities to match their different learning styles and interests.
