My students need a wide variety of 8 multicultural literature libraries and photo book series that will give them an opportunity to learn about different people and places around the world. We also need a Differing Abilities Poster Pack.

Spring Lake, NC Grades 3-5

I teach third, fourth, and fifth-grade special needs students at a large elementary school. The school is located in an area where many families are struggling economically. Many students at our school do not have the opportunity to travel outside their community and to meet people from diverse cultures and places. Multicultural books with up-to-date photos offer windows into the world in which they live.

Students in my classroom are sometimes not accepted by other students at the school, because their disabilities are seen as something that makes them "different." There is also a great lack of awareness of diverse cultures and contributions made by those with disabilities and people from diverse backgrounds. I have looked through our school's media center and surveyed a variety of teachers about their classroom libraries. I have discovered a great need for material that covers diversity.

Our school needs multicultural books with up-to-date photos and stories that will offer windows into the much larger world in which the students live. Our students need to learn about people from diverse backgrounds, who have contributed to society and those that have "disabilities."

Prejudice is often fostered by a lack of understanding and acceptance of those who are "different." My hope is to bring the world to our students, through books and pictures. In doing so, I hope to increase awareness, tolerance, and respect for diversity throughout our school, and perhaps, throughout the community, as well. Your help will make it possible for all the students at our school to have an opportunity to see the beauty in our diverse world and to embrace it with respect and tolerance.
