My students need 29 high-quality non-fiction picture books to use as models for creating their own non-fiction picture books that will be sent to children in Uganda. We also need a binding machine and binding spines to finish our books and make them beautiful!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you believe that EVERY child should have the opportunity to go to college, regardless of their zip code? At my school in Texas, we believe exactly that. Our school exists to send low-income kids to college so that they can come back and transform their communities. I teach 7th grade English at an inner city charter school where we work hard every day to provide kids with the educational and emotional resources they need to be successful in life.
Although our children are in need themselves, we want to instill in them an attitude of service to others. We want them to work to improve their community and other communities in need. It is our dream to have our kids participate in a program called "Books of Hope". This innovative and inspiring program partners US schools with schools in Uganda serving the orphaned and mostly HIV positive civil war refugees. Ugandan schools request books to be used for instructional purposes, and the US schools then create nonfiction picture books as a part of a nonfiction unit of study. The finished books are sent to Uganda with personal notes and pictures from the US students. The books truly provide hope.
In order to have our students participate in "Books of Hope", we are in need a few resources. We will need a collection of high-quality nonfiction picture books for our kids to use as resources and models for their own nonfiction writing. We will also need a binding machine and binding spines to make our finished books durable, useful, and beautiful.
With a donation to this project, you are not only helping US students learn and grow, but you will be contributing to an amazing project that is impacting global literacy. Kids from Texas all the way to Uganda will be grateful for your generosity!
