This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember when reading in school was boring? Not anymore! Students in my reading workshop read books of their choice and on their reading level. Each year, they read more than forty books! Compared to a traditional English class where students read, on average, 4 books a year, our results are exceptional! I teach at an inner city charter school where we do "Whatever It Takes" to send low income kids to college. Many of my students come to me 2-4 years behind in reading, and they have not grown up as readers. My reluctant readers need reading role models and LOTS of books!
Reluctant readers need new, exciting, hot books to grab their attention. Research shows that the more kids read, the more their reading skills progress. Unfortunately, there is not nearly enough in our school's budget to buy the new books we need to keep our readers reading.
Your donation can help me purchase a list of the best books for young adults in 2008. The books I'd like to purchase are recommended by the National Council of Teachers of English as "best bets" for today's teens!
We need realistic fiction such as The Underneath, The Secret of Sonia Rodriguez, My One Hundred Adventures, and Hero Type. We'd also love fantasy and science fiction such as How to Ditch Your Fairy, In The Small, Test, and Savvy.
We are sending low income students to college, and YOU can be a part of it! Please help us purchase the books our classroom library needs. Your gift of reading could impact a child forever.
