I teach a great group of future leaders in New York. These students are preparing themselves to be the next generation of leaders in this community. The community they live in makes being positive and cheerful hard and the fact that our school has very limited resources often makes things difficult. Yet every day these kids show up ready to learn. They make me want to come to work!

My students have been told by people in their community that they will never succeed, that school is not what will help them be successful. However, when they get excited about the technology or lost in the math the voice of the naysayers disappear and a whole new future opens up in front of them. Unfortunately we are very limited in our access to the supplies needed to inspire these students.

With a digital video camera and tripod my students will have the opportunity to participate more fully in their own education. I want the students to have the opportunity to make, edit and present their own "how to videos" explaining how they understand the mathematical concept the class is working on. For instance they could create a video presentation about the steps needed to divide decimals for the whole class to learn from. Perhaps their perspective on the problem will allow other to engage more fully with the material being taught. We can then post these videos for all 6th grade math students to review and learn from. These Video vignette will give the students a way of teaching to and learning from each other.

These kids are desperate for someone, anyone, to show them that they can do something great with their lives. Every day I try to let them know that they are important, that they can have an amazing future. You have the ability, through your donation, to show them someone else out there cares.
