Ms. m. Maidu Elementary School
Roseville, CA Grades PreK-2

I am a Full-Inclusion Special Education teacher working to integrate children with autism into the general education setting. I serve student in preschool through fifth grade.

Allow me to introduce to you the Circle of Friends club. In essence the club is a way to ensure that every student at this school has friends that they can rely on despite any diagnosis or disability. Many of the students I serve do not have friendship making skills. Their autism impairs their ability to relate to others and they often spend their recesses pacing the perimeter of the schoolyard all alone, making them easy prey to bullies and subject to loneliness. It is not that these children do not want friends--they simply do not know how to make them. To remedy this situation, children (both typically developing children and those with special needs) were invited to join our club because they believe in friendship and its power to help each of them to become a better person, trustworthy, dependable, understanding and fun. The club has been meeting for about a month now, but there is a definite need for appropriate materials for out kinder students. Imaginative play is extremely difficult for student on the autism spectrum and the dress-up clothes would provide me with many teachable moments; enrich language; and promote social skills development.

I am requesting a trunk of dress-up clothes for boys and girls; an astronaut costume; a fireman costume; a doctor's costume; and a police officer uniform.

I have been collecting donations since the start of the school year, but have not been able procure any costumes or dress-up clothes. Your donation will make it possible for my younger students to build successful peer relationships.
