International Cooking Uganda Style

Science with an international flare! I teach 7th grade science that infused many of my experiences from Uganda. My students lack experience with science outside of the school walls and a lack in global sense.

Since my trip my students have been seeing science through their eyes and eyes of students from a third world country. Recently, we have discussed a world without electricity and what it is like. Cooking has grabbed my students attention and the idea that food can be cooked without electricity.

So, we would like to build our own Ugandan stove and experience solar cooking stoves. By having both stoves we can compare efficiency and discuss the progression of technology. We need two solar ovens to help strengthen their international learning with Uganda.

Our students are entering a world we can not teach them about, because we do not know what it looks like. However, we can teach children how to deal with problems that do not exist yet. I propose to teach skills they will need to be good problem solvers, we would should start with the technology that started it all!
