This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Friends, I would like to invite you into my school setting reality. I am an innovative educator whom seeks to look at my profession with the glass have full. The student s, which I teach are very needy because of their present and past traumatic experiences. At an early age, my inner city school students have been confronted with many economical and social hardships. Role models have become nonexistence in their lives. As a result the school has become their only safe haven. In my classroom, I try to provide a nurturing environment where students are able to explore and discover their strengths and work on their academic weaknesses. The subject areas that I teach are extremely empowering-Math, Social Studies and Science. At this time, I humble request funding to purchase an engaging Math Center and Library.
Without many educational supplies, I have sought ways to provide high interest, grade level resources for my students. I have begged the community for donations but to no avail. Everyone continues to remind me of the economical recession and crisis. Yet, I have not lost faith in my school community partners. My goal is to stir some hearts, so I can be assisted in empowering my below mastery grade level students. These students need intensive interventions in Math and in Literature. By exposing the students to a dynamic library where both subject matters are meshed, students will be able to acquire the required grade level benchmarks quicker and better. According to Daniel Harvey (1987), students learn best when they are exposed to motivating teachers and materials. Basically, my students need to learn and acquire the Math concepts such as Time, Circumference, Factoring, Fractions, Division, Perimeter and Area through reading and hands-on experiences.
The instructional engaging materials that I have humbly requested are culturally sensitive for my grade level students. All materials can be utilized in differentiated instructional lesson planning and centers. All learning styles can be enhanced and validated. Critical thinking strategies can be integrated and reinforced. With the purchase of these Math Reading materials, no child will be left behind.
According to Marilyn Burns (1990), students learn best when teachers expose them to real world math experiences through high, interactive applicable activities in the classroom. Math can be much more appreciated when there are teachers whom display enthusiasm when teaching this subject area. Dynamic teaching promotes dynamic learning for students to make connections and think "outside the box". As an educator, I have vowed to make a difference. All generous contributions will not be spent in vain. The acquired funds will be utilized to purchase third grade engaging math activities and story books to accommodate the students' academic growth and potential abilities. Thank you.
