How Many Ways Can I Use Base 10 Blocks?

My students need base ten blocks to learn and understand place value and strengthen their number sense. In addition, they need materials such as triangle flash cards, bear counters, equivalency puzzles, and place value dice.

In my second grade classroom, there are 23 students, most of which come from a high-need background. They come to school and know that I care about them and that school is a safe place to learn.

My school does not have enough base ten manipulatives for each teacher, and when this is a staple item in a second grade classroom, it becomes quite a challenge. I'm always asking to borrow, but if that teacher is using their materials for the day, I'm out of luck. This is all too common when we all teach the same concepts at about the same time. My class missed a lot in first grade, due to circumstances that caused them to have three different teachers. I'm teaching concepts that should have been taught in first grade in addition to the second grade curriculum.

My classroom needs base ten blocks and other supplies that help reinforce the concept of base ten. To introduce this concept, students need to be able to count and group objects. This can be done by using the bear counters and Unifix cubes, then moving forward to recognizing groups of tens. These number relationships can then be reinforced and practiced in a math center with triangular flash cards, and place value dice that let them build numbers in expanded notation.

Your donation will help tremendously. I'm trying so hard to make a huge impact with these students, but I cannot do it alone. Having number sense is something that every student needs and these manipulatives will help accommodate their learning. Also, knowing that there is someone out that they have never met, that cares about their learning, will help them value their learning and the experiences we have everyday in the classroom.
