I teach 7th grade world history/cultures and teach in a rural school with 150 in my grade level. We struggle as a faculty having the kids even bring their own paper and pencils must less have the ability to expect them to come with atlas' or any other supply that would better help them understand the world around them. I teach in a school district where a higher percentage of my students come from parents that did not even graduate high school much less have the chance to go to college.

We have resources in the room such as a world map but nothing that the kids can actually interact with to better help them understand how one ancient world civilization was dependent on another. If the kids could do some hands on learning with a large map, I feel it would give them more understanding as to how the world around them relates to other parts of the world.

My students need a map that they can write on and erase in order to put themselves into the "journey" across the world from old civilizations to new civilizations. The more involved the kids are and the more creative that they are allowed to be, the better they will understand which oceans need crossing, which landforms are in the "way" and how geography really is related to the movement of people groups.

Your donations would ensure that my high risk rural community children have the chance to learn using some hands-on manipulative approaches that are proven to work with kids between the ages of 11-13. Kids will only learn if they can be INVOLVED in the understanding of the subject. Asking them to listen as I point to a wall map is not NEAR as involving as asking them to come up and map the route that was taken down the Nile River to impede the civilizations of the ancient Egyptians....that is where learning is more exciting for them.
