Rubber Duckies are so Fine....Wish We Had Some.

My students need a Lakeshore Math Counters Library.

Ernie has a rubber duckie, however a Utah kindergarten class has to go without due to funding. I teach two sessions of half-day kindergarten and our school just opened up two years ago. We are still trying to get the basic necessities of desks, tables and construction paper.

At present I have 20 counters total in my classroom. A normal classroom would need at very minimum 500 for each student to have 20 counters each. I have printed out pictures and cut out die cuts until my hands hurt. Regretfully these do not last. I have used my bonus points to order objects to count, sort and pattern but, the size isn't enough for even a small center. My class cannot complete a simple ABC pattern activity for four children, because I do not have enough manipulatives to complete the pattern strip. My class does not know how to use teddy bear addition, because we don't have any teddy bears. I believe in hands-on math, but with no materials it is impossible to hold to the research-proven standard, and work sheets must be substituted. These worksheets are out of the students concrete (having to touch and feel concepts to understand them) development. They are frustrating and do not allow for developmentally correct principles in the early childhood classroom.

A simple addition of a set of manipulatives would allow sorting, patterning( that would complete the pattern strip) and counting to more than 20 for more than one student. These are basic kindergarten skills that cannot be accomplished without the use of manipulatives and I lack the funds and personal resources to buy them for my class.

A simple donation of manipulatives would allow 50 students to experience math and create a great hands-on foundation. This foundation will instill a deep understanding of math that more complex concepts can be built upon. Without this foundation the math program remains 2-D instead of the enriching 3-D experience that kindergartners need to develop properly.
