I am a Special Education teacher presently working in a District 75 school with students on the autism spectrum. My students have limited speech. They range in age 4 yrs to 5 yrs. I am working on various daily academic as well as ADL skills.

All the students in my school are using picture symbols to help them with communication. I have seen overtime how, by increasing a students communication skills, decreases their aggressive behavior and frustration level.

With the implementation of communication boards using printed pictures, symbols and sign language, we have seen tremendous growth in all areas of the students life's both in school and at home. When a parent needs specially made individualized boards they send me a note and I make them with the Speech Therapist to send home. Just recently a Mom wrote that they were going to a 25th Wedding Anniversary party. Mom sent some pictures to scan and we added celebration words/symbols so they could be prepared for the party.

Having enough ink and paper assures me that whenever a student or their family need communication assistance I will be there for them. Communication for a nonverbal child is the key to achieving individualized goals. I would be forever grateful for any assistance with this project.
