Video Camera Needed for Public Service Announcement

I teach Algebra 2 at a small urban high school in California. The student body at our school is comprised of Black and Latinos. We have a beefed up role for our advisory classes, which meets for 75 minutes 3 times a week. My advisees are looped with me, which means this, their Senior Year, is their second consecutive year in my advisory (I'm a 2nd year teacher). As much as is possible, I like to include Service Learning in the curriculum. Last year we organized a Book Drive event to augment our school's (anemic) library and ultimately collected over 1,000 teen friendly books and additional monetary donations. This year they want to make a video.

We have watched several Public Service Announcements created by urban high schools in Los Angeles. Example topics include Composting, Recycling and Battery Disposal. My students are inspired to produce a video that is creative, factual and convincing. They want to explore the War on Drugs. I am also thrilled about this opportunity, provided I can acquire a Digital Camcorder. Not only will this engage the students naturally, it introduces a highly relevant skill in the "Youtube Era" -- Video Production, a skill that could easily motivate them through 4 years of college. I envision an opportunity for this inquiry driven project to teach key research, persuasion and stastical skills.

A Digital Camcorder is all we need. Editing can be done on my laptop and on another computer I have in my classroom. I have the software they need, and contacts in video production to help them along the way.

Please support an urban high school graduating class in organizing around a highly sophisticated, controversial and impactful current event, and gaining pertinent technology skills in the process. I promise to share both the Public Service Announcement and the Making of Documentary publicly.
