Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Look at this photograph...every time I do it makes me laugh..." Nickelback's lyrics ring so true when we flip through old yearbooks. Though we may find them full of embarrassing pictures, they hold so many memories for each of us. In the age of MySpace and Facebook, my students love nothing more than to document their life in photos.

However, our high school has never had a yearbook. We are a charter school for at-risk students, and we are the only school that most of these students ever attend. This year we have decided to start our fist ever yearbook, complete with a yearbook staff. Our students have so much working against them these days and we want them to look back with pride years from now, knowing that they graduated against all odds. Though the diploma proves they succeeded, a yearbook will give them something to remember. They can share it with younger siblings and their own children to inspire them as well.

Students are so excited and so many of them want to be photographers. Most of their photography experience is limited to cell phone cameras. We have passionate students, a yearbook company willing to publish, and a principal who is supporting us. All we need now is a digital camera.

A yearbook without pictures is no yearbook at all. Please help make this a reality for our students. Let them forever preserve memories in photos they can laugh at years from now.
