You could call my students the "Lost Kids". I teach Resource Language Arts to 6th grade students with a variety of physical/learning disabilities.

My students are functioning way below grade level but are expected to work toward mastery of grade-level objectives. They need appropriate modifications/accommodations in order to be successful. They lack the language background/experience to know basic word meanings and comprehend what they read or what is read to them. They also need to be able to USE tools like dictionaries and thesauruses to help themselves become independent learners.

My students need access to dictionaries and thesauruses. They need to learn how to use them so they will be independent learners and also because dictionary skills are addressed on state tests. They lack understanding/comprehension of grade-level and below grade level vocabulary words.

Your help will make it possible for my students to improve their listening and reading comprehension. This in turn will better prepare them to be responsible, contributing members of society.
