Rolling Author's Gift of Wisdom

My students need 2 large office chairs with wheels, and three other office chairs with wheels.

Just as the invention of the wheel made life easier, chairs with wheels will help budding authors roll to success. We are an Abbott district, which means that our town is one of the poorest in the state of New Jersey. Because many families cannot afford the necessities of life, some of our students must come to school just to have a meal. Because of the economic disadvantages, many of our students have academic problems as well. At least 28% of our students receive some degree of special services. And still, this does not guarantee success. Many of our students who are not eligible for special services slip through the cracks, and may be doomed to a life of failure. Unfortunately, many of these students are "unseen" because they are quiet and well behaved. Our middle school's PASS Program was designed to help this student population master the skills that will help them achieve success.

PASS students suffer from the learned behavior culture of "I can't". This ingrained life philosophy impedes their progress, just as surely as poverty does. In addition to teaching students the regular and remedial academic curriculum, PASS teaches the students that they CAN. They CAN learn, they CAN be successful, they CAN have a future, and most importantly, they CAN make a difference.

The Rolling Author's Gift of Wisdom project is one that we hope to continue this year. Because our chairs (one of the highlights of the project from a student's perspective) are now torn, raggedy, and falling apart, we must condemn them to the garbage heap as no quantity of duct tape, nails, glue, and ingenuity can save them. So, to provide a safe environment we need to replace the Author's, Recipient's, and Special Guests' chairs. Without the privilege of sitting in the Author's, Recipient's, and Special Guests' chairs, the project looses much of its magic. If you have any doubt that the Rolling Author's Gift of Wisdom Project is not magical, consider that just the other day, a high school junior volunteered to share the specially created personalized tale of wisdom that was written for him when he was in kindergarten. The fact that the tale survives 11 years later when sometimes little else in a student's life has, attests to the value of the program.

Your gift of an Author's, a Recipient's, or a Special Guest's chair will allow students to reach across the ages and give a gift of learning.
