There is no balance for my beautiful fourth graders, well, not working balance beams anyway! I am a special education teacher in a high need district of Long Island. In my inclusion class, children with special needs learn alongside their regular education peers. It is hard to learn when you don’t have the materials you need, but my students are dedicated, they never give up.
Fourth graders are measuring! We use rulers to measure length, thermometers to measure the temperature, we try to measure mass, but we can’t. Our pan balances are old and broken. Before we use them, we need to spend a lot of time putting clay on each end to try to get it balanced. On the NYS Science exam the children are expected to use a pan balance to measure weight, our districts economic problems put them at a disadvantage, here… there is no balance.
The solution to this problem is simple. Our class needs balance beams. With a small set of balance beams we would be able to practice measuring mass and finding balance in our world! The balance beams I am asking for are made of plastic, which is durable for young scientists. These balance beams have an equalizer, so we wouldn’t need to put clay on the ends to balance them.
With your help, I can bring a little balance into my student’s lives. Please don’t let enthusiastic young scientists become discouraged! Don’t you think students who want to learn should get the materials they deserve?
