Educating global citizens is easier said then done! My 10th grade, public school, US History students live in a town experiencing an identity crisis. The push to provide a more cosmopolitan education from our school board and superintendent is resisted by voices advocating a retreat to the local.

Our school has been hit by budget cuts from the state and local levels. Also, the history department is short one staff member which makes class sizes 30 plus. Changes in curriculum are being undertaken to educate our students in a globalized and international world. Textbooks wouldn't work as well in our fast paced environment and technology finances are minimal, often going to science and math departments. Lastly, my students' families are unable to take lavish trips that allow for direct experiences.

A projector expands the function of my laptop from gradebook to classroom super tool. Podcasts, primary sources, secondary sources, video and audio content can be used easily with depth and range. Moreover, it allows for 100s of students to be excited about the world (past and present), connect to a global culture and see possibilities, not borders culturally and intellectually.

Students don't know where places are, who lives there or what their relationship is to them as Americans. Global understanding through History and Social Studies courses is needed now more than ever. The call to broaden a student's perspective comes from economic, political and social institutions. Your help will open doors to students that they didn't know existed.
