Weatherly H.S. Community Service Art Projects

My students need grout sealer, paints, and paint products to complete a community service project.

My students are trying to raise money to purchase a building to house a new public library and community center. I teach art classes in a public school and have all the students donate a specific project which is auctioned off with all proceeds benefiting the community library. The entire town and all the students benefit from having a new library.

What better way to have students involved in the community then to have them help to raise the money to fund a new public library. Libraries are good for the economy in that the costs are very low to be able to read and expand ones thinking without the expense of purchasing books. The pride that each student has knowing they were instrumental in building a library from the ground up is something they will carry with them their entire life

The students will be painting birdhouses that are built by our shop classes. They will need to gesso the bird house, paint in the style of a famous artist using acrylic paint and then seal the houses with a weatherproof sealer. These projects get donated to the library and then are auctioned off to the highest bidder. All the money raised goes to the purchase of a building and contents for a community library. Each student now has helped to fund the library that they may use for school work and enjoyment. The money comes full circle. The students will need acrylic paint and sealer to paint the bird houses. It is also useful to have good paint brushes and a good quality gesso to prime the wood to be painted. Community service is a great way for students to take pride in their town with small accomplishments but it takes materials like the ones mentioned to get the job done.
