Ukuleles for Elementary Music

My students need 8 Ukuleles.

This project expired on April 3, 2009.

I teach music to over 700 students from grades K-5th. I enjoy being able to show and let them play instruments from different cultures. It really helps us learn more about who we are and who others are around the world when we can experience their music and get a taste of their culture.

We have a shortage of instruments from around the world, and most of the instruments we have are a little dated and don't reflect the current culture. When is the last time you heard a person play the auto harp? I would like to jump into the 21st century by introducing instruments to my students from all over the world. I would also love to get them to play some stringed instruments like guitar or even a Ukulele (which is a nice size for elementary kids).

I think starting out with a couple Ukuleles is the best solution. I can both introduce an instrument from around the world from a different culture AND start teaching some students how to play it. Maybe if it becomes a big hit, we could eventually get a class set so everyone can play.

Kids today are interested in guitars and pop music more then folk music and auto harps. The problem with just ordering guitars is that there are a lot of strings for small kids and they can be too big in size also. Instruments like the Ukulele and even the Mandolin are a great size for the average elementary student. I would love to get a set of 30 Ukuleles for my kids, but that's not realistic. So I would like to add an additional 8 ukuleles to the 8 I already have, and eventually build up until we can have everyone playing one.
