We are a Title One school in the middle of a budget crisis in need of paper manipulatives for my low income and English learners. Because of the diverse and low income culture from which my students come, they begin kindergarten with a language and math deficit. My language deficient learners learn quickly when they can use manipulatives to see and manipulate the concept I am trying to teach.

I believe the old adage about learning through doing. This is hard for kindergarten students when learning to count, matching numbers to sets and problem solving. Using manipulatives they can touch and manipulate as we learn concepts like counting, ordinal positions, addition, and subtraction helps them to internalize these concepts for memorization. Using literature as a springboard for these activities lets me get double teaching for the same time and adds interest for the students. To do this I need paper manipulatives that students can manipulate to solve a given problem and then use literacy skills to express the solution as a book or page for a class book. Students can then share their problem solving with other students as we learn from each other.

With the Cricut die-cut machine and cartridges I can cut paper manipulatives based on the book we are tying into the math concept. These will be given to students who will use them to express a solution to a mathematical problem based on the book. Using their literacy skills and the paper manipulatives, a book or page for a class book will be completed by each student as they glue the manipulatives to the page(s) to solve the given problem. Students will then be able to share their problem solving skills with their friends and family.

The Cricut machine will expand my teaching options and impact learning in more subject areas. Using the paper manipulatives will allow me to impact students by incorporating literacy into my math teaching time. And time is my most valued commodity. By funding this grant you will doubly impact these 22 students and my students in the years to come since the Cricut will be a renewable resource from year to year.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
