The Sign of a Classic Reader

My single gender male class needs 30 copies of the classic novel "The Sign of the Beaver", by Elizabeth George Speare, as well as the book on CD. I also ask for the Teacher Guide so that I can find engaging activities to inspire them to a love of reading.

Have you ever tried to get thirteen rambunctious 7th grade BOYS to read classic literature?

I teach four classes of seventh grade English/Language Arts in a rural school in South Carolina, and one of them is a single gender class of 13 boys who can "never" find anything "good" to read that has a male protagonist. This single gender class is a wonderful mixture of income levels, learning styles, and learning levels. Students range from special needs students who have trouble reading and writing to honors level students who would read a book a day if they could find books that suited them. I am searching for a book to teach on a whole-class basis that can be adapted to the needs of all of my learners, and Elizabeth George Speare's The Sign of the Beaver fits the bill perfectly. The story of a young man left to take care of his family farm would give my young men the adventure and male protagonist they are eagerly searching for, and give them some ideas on how to make appropriate choices in the future.

I am ready to take my single gender boy class to the next level! The class set (30 books) of the novel will be instrumental in teaching the boys literature elements and self-evaluation as they look at their decision making skills. I humbly ask for 30 novels, since I hope to have a larger all-male class next year. I also ask for the recorded novel. Many times, students need to hear good readers to develop fluency with their reading. Some of my students are unable to sit and read for a long amount of time, and with the novel on CD they can listen to it in a small group or individually with a CD Walkman. Finally, the teaching guide would be a great help as I try to find engaging activities to go with the activities that I already have swirling in my mind: creating our own models of the farm and surrounding area, spending a class period outside acting out some of the young mens' favorite scenes from the novel. These supplies will greatly serve my students since they will be the users of all of the supplies. I am certain that through the use of the supplies and the engagement in the lessons, my students' scores on the state test will skyrocket!

Your help will ensure that these 13 gentlemen, and the gentlemen that I teach in the future, will not have to resort to the phrase "You are teaching us a girl book!" There is nothing like helping a young man or woman find a love of reading. With your donation, you will ensure that 13 young men will remember their seventh grade year as an adventure and will remember the people who donated the books to them to help make that possible.
