Recordings For Literacy

My students need a Snowball USB Microphone Package, LaCie DVD duplicator, and 100 blank DVDs to record personal writing, songs, poems, and inspire them to publish audio projects that promote literacy.

I teach 25 creative and active third graders in Alaska. We have a lot of fun as we work hard and learn. Many of my students come from low-income families and don't have opportunities to get out and explore our world. We try to fill that gap with rich experiences at school. Every new experience is an opportunity to research information, write about it, and present our finding in varied and creative ways.

My students love to publish their work. Sometimes we try to compile their poems and writings into books or posters and occasionally publish on the Internet. They also like to hear their own voices and recently we've been exploring recording their work into the classroom computer. This has inspired some tremendous writing and excellent vocal presentations. Our classroom computer has an internal microphone that makes very poor quality recordings. The computer also lacks any way for us to record our CDs or DVDs and we are forced to take our work to outside sources to publish. This is a very slow and tedious process.

Sometimes students can be reluctant to do their best work when they don't see the benefit of learning. As a teacher, I sometimes need to find creative ways to inspire them to put more effort into their work. I've noticed that whenever a student knows that there is a real audience for their publications, it increases the quality of their work. I want to have students record their writing, songs, poems, stories, plays, book-talks, and articles throughout the year and take them home to share with their friends and families. We will then make a compilation of their work for a take-home album at the end of the year. It will also be good for students to share recordings of their readings with other classes in our school and in other venues. A small recording studio and the ability to mass-produce our work is a great way to inspire my students and give them a genuine audience.

Your generous support will give my students a new way to permanently record their work and share it with others. Through this equipment, students will be inspired to put their best efforts into their work and in the process grow in their learning. These recordings will be listened to again and again and will be proudly kept for many, many years. When a student hears their own voice reading their best work in their own voice, it builds self-confidence and personal pride.
