Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The best bilingual students would like to use new technologies in their classroom. I have been teaching a self-contained bilingual class in a Title I school (very high levels of free lunch students) for about four years. In all these years in the classroom, I have been making my own instructional material to benefit my bilingual students in most cases limited English Proficient (LEP) students. For this purpose, I have tried to make cross-curricular activities that include a great variety of images and the use of manipulatives. My teaching techniques and strategies have also evolved over the time to make my lessons more engaging and rich in content.

After analyzing my students’ extracurricular activities and likes, I have determined that they are ready for new ways of obtaining, using, and manipulating educational content. An additional way to engage my students in learning is by using I-pods as a complement of regular instruction. I will add all the material I have created (in basic HTML format) in English and Spanish during these years of teaching in all subjects to the I-pods. This material includes: summaries, graphs, educational videos, questions and possible alternatives, and so on that will complement and enrich regular instruction. The use of all the material included in these “digital manipulatives” will help my students to review what has been learned in class during certain times of the day such as study hall, after or before school starts or during tutorials. All this relevant material will be available to reinforce their knowledge. In addition, these Ipods will be used for presenting and sharing student created content that has been approved and is ready to enrich other students in our school. The use of these “cutting edge tools” will help to give an additional push to my students in the learning process and will also give them

Among the objectives of this project, I can mention: increase science, math, and English language arts vocabulary, motivation, exposure to new technology, improve performance in math, science, and English language arts, exposure to cognates, increase exposure to images and graphs, use of additional teaching techniques, reaching digital learners, etc. The use of Ipods will help with some methods of learning which include: collaborative learning, engaged learning, problem based learning, discovery based learning, cooperative learning, creative learning, etc. This project will be evaluated by analyzing quantitative data that shows the improvement of my students from a point before and after the Ipods were used. Another way to analyze the success of the project is to study the level of participation of my students. I will not only determine the number of times my students participate in class but the quality of their participation. In order to make good use of these tools, I would like for my students to get at least 5 Ipod Nanos so they can work in pairs. Ipods Nano(4GB) will allow educational video, audio, gaming, text, and other capabilities.

Your support on this project will allow the bilingual students in my class to become digital learners and initiate a path to success in this technological century. The implementation of this project will be done as soon as possible. The material is ready and will be uploaded to the Ipods ASAP to help students improve their school performance. Lesson plans will be developed to include the use of Ipods in my instruction. This project will not only affect 18 students in my fifth grade bilingual class but will also be used in bilingual classrooms in lower grade levels (4th, 3rd, and 2nd) for which there is not much material in both languages (English and Spanish) available in the market. After demonstrating the success of the project, it will be implemented school wide.
