I am a special education teacher working with the school social worker and middle school English Teacher. Our club focus is the girls in grades 6-8 from our K-8 urban school. Our school and students represent a very diverse range of social and ethnic groups.

The Cougars' Mother Daughter Book Club is a vehicle to build stronger parent/child relationships while instilling a love and appreciation for literature. Through monthly meetings,the book club offers a time for mothers/daughters sharing and dialog. it gives teenage girls a voice at an age when females are often silent or reluctant to share. In addition, it offers the gift of literature.

The literature club will offer a safe forum for young women to practice using critical thinking skills outside the classroom and applying valuable insights and inferences to their own developing lives. Since many themes of adolescent literature include serious and sensitive topics (death, friendships, puberty, family struggles, bullying and relationships, to name a few) the girls can reflect and share their ideas and concerns knowing no one will laugh or ridicule them. The literature circle offers both the mother and daughter the chance to belong to a community where diversity is respected and where all other opinions are valued.Together they will grow and trust each other celebrating in their differences and finding commonalities.

The club will address our school's SMART goals through this innovative approach to involve our parents directly in their child's maturation. It will develop and model parenting skills through parent-child interaction and monthly focus group discussion and promote the love of literature through monthly group meetings.
