Second Graders Learning to Play Chess!

Our students need a TV/DVD player. We are teaching our second-grade students to play chess. We have all the chess materials and DVDs needed to teach them through a non-profit organization called First Move. This group brings the game of chess to young children, has provided training for the lead teacher, but they don't provide the TV/DVD player that we desperately need.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We teach second grade students in a high-poverty area of Chicago. Many of our students do not speak English at home and their parents have come here looking for a better life for their children.

We have been given the great opportunity to teach our second-grade students the game of chess. We are excited to be able to teach children from this high-poverty area with limited English skills to learn this classic game of skill and thinking. We have the chess sets and the DVDs but no TV/DVD to play them on. The lessons have been provided by the non-profit organization, First Move. They have given us all of the chess materials and the DVD's needed BUT NO TV/DVD. There is barely any money in our school for even basic supplies, so having the school provide us with a TV/DVD is out of the question.

We have all the materials we need EXCEPT a TV/DVD player. Please help us make this wonderful program complete for our students. Just one TV/DVD combo will make it possible for all four second-grade classrooms to teach chess through this program.

Our students come to us with so little. Many of them come from one-parent households, many do not know both parents, and many have home lives that would make your heart break. We are trying to lift them up and provide them with the kind of learning and opportunities available to those of us from more fortunate backgrounds. We want them to be able to dream above their situations and ultimately become happy and profitable contributors to our great country.
