In a word... Presentation On the Internet Digital Communication Actively Seeking Twenty-first Century Innovation Now Global I am an instructional technology facilitator for a middle school in North Carolina. I work with all teachers and students in the school. I see my primary job as a leader of and model for technology integration throughout the curriculum. My school was built in 1999 for a population of 784 students. Our enrollment has reached 1236 students, and our instructional staff has grown to 108 members. Our population is diverse, as shown by the following demographics: Male: 50.5% / Female: 49.5% White: 40.8% / Black: 32.3% / Hispanic: 19.5% / Asian: .03% / Multiracial: .05%. Our average class size is 30 students. Over 46% of our students receive free/reduced lunch.

This year, as I planned the school's technology staff development, I realized I wanted to focus on newer technologies such as blogs, wikis, and Google Tools for Educators. I wanted teachers to learn about and integrate tools that our students understand and already use so well. Our students are no longer passive watchers of technology, but doers - they chat, they blog, they network, they text. They are "out there" willingly exploring emerging ways to communicate with each other. As I looked over my list of possible “emerging technology” training, Podcasting caught my eye. Podcasts are digital audio and video files which can be uploaded to the Internet or to a school website and be downloaded by any student who has access to a computer, an mp3 player, or an iPod. Podcasts can be about any topic, but I think most students and teachers would use it for presenting a project, explaining a problem, creating a story, summarizing a book, or listening to a lesson or a language. After reading more about the process and exploring how other educators are using it, I realized it would be a new vehicle for student presentation of themselves and of their experience of learning.

My plan is to utilize the space already set up for our morning daily news broadcast by opening it up the rest of the day to teachers and students for creating podcasts. Our newsroom has a digital camcorder, a computer, and a teleprompter, but we need a few items to launch a Podcasting Station. Podcasting is relatively inexpensive since the software is a free download. Students can use the computer and teleprompter to write and practice their scripts. But, we need one headset with a built-in microphone, so that students can clearly record and hear their presentations. If I receive this grant, I would like to begin the project by training my student news crew, which involves about 60 students a year. By creating podcasts of our daily news shows and posting them on the "Students" section of our website, we can model and encourage students and teachers to try podcasting. Because our school is so large and since our newsroom can accommodate only a few students, I would also like to request two Podcasting "kits," which teachers could check out from the media center to create podcasts in their classrooms. One Podcast kit would include two headsets with built-in microphones and one webcam.

Your donation will help us expand the use of our newsroom to include a podcasting station, where students and teachers can work in small groups to craft informational digital presentations. By funding the additional podcasting kits, the podcast experience will be available to all students and teachers in their classrooms. I believe that podcasting has the potential to increase our reading and writing scores. More importantly, the podcasting experience will increase student self-esteem, collaboration, and innovation. Your assistance will allow me to offer my students a creative and entertaining avenue for learning and self-expression.
