Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 8th grade teacher in an urban area of California. My amazing students love learning about science!
Though we do our best to teach about ecology and biodiversity using our supplied science textbook, it is not enough. My students deserve to experience what students in other, higher-income schools often have access to - visiting science experts to bring in hands-on activities!
I want to bring the Center for Ecosystem Survival's Insect Discovery Lab to my classroom. This organization was recently featured in the San Francisco Chronicle for its "enthralling" presentations to local schools. When researching more about the program, I learned that it would certainly be a great match for the 6th grade science curriculum and would without a doubt engage my students in learning more about their environment.
The program is described as such: Students explore the fantastic lives of beetles, millipedes, tarantulas, walking sticks, whip scorpions, and more. The Insect Discovery Lab immerses students in the extraordinarily diverse world of insects and other arthropods and teaches about their key role in the web of life. Scientific observation, insect identification, and the natural history of bugs’ lives are just some of the areas of focus in this program.
Thank you so much for your consideration - I would be so excited to tell my students that someone has helped us to bring a very memorable experience to our science classroom.
