I come from a very diverse community, with primarily low income families. I teach 8th grade students Health, Physical Education, Family Life, and Life Skills.
I was working on the sit-and-reach test and found myself teaching many stretches I learned as a yoga student myself. My students took interest in the practice of yoga and they noticed the benefits after the first session I did with them. I would love to do a yoga unit, however, we do not have a single yoga mat.
So I will need 30 yoga mats and a background music CD. Practicing yoga helps to calm the students as well as prepare them for better learning in other classes. Yoga is a huge stress reliever for them as well. A student told me as they were walking out of their first session of yoga, "Wow, I feel real light, like I'm walking on clouds!" What a great feeling!
You will help create a more calm learning environment as well as increase the students ability to learn. Yoga focuses on breathing techniques, creating more blood flow to the brain, creating more oxygen entering the brain, creating a learn-able student.
