Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The writing process for anyone is difficult but for high school students it is painful, especially when there is a lot of pressure on them to perform well on a high stakes writing test. I work at a vocational high school in Florida and have the honor of teaching many minority, low-income students in a special setting. My students are gifted children in a Pre-AP Language Arts class who have a lot of experience with technology outside of the classroom setting among other interests. I have tried to bring in what the students love into the classroom throughout my experience to create a rigorous classroom curriculum and a meaningful and fun learning experience for them.

To incorporate technology in the classroom while instructing my gifted students on the writing process would be remarkable! Over the past couple of years, I have spent a lot of money on posters about writing and photocopies of student papers, but nothing makes the task of writing more effective than when students can write, share or publish their writing right away and then see it transform from to an exceptional piece of written text through the revision and editing process. I have created writing lessons and presentations that allow the students to learn and actively engage in the writing process. These writing lessons are workshops, where students are actively involved and active in the writing process. There are opportunities for students to work individually, in cooperative groups, and directly with the teacher. Overall, these workshops provide the opportunity for students to learn about the writing process in a painless, fun, and effective way. Unfortunately though, our school setting --especially with all the budget cuts to education--- has so few resources available that I cannot teach my students writing effectively using the technology they have so much experience with.

We are desperately in need of a Digital Visual Presenter Document Camera to capture the student’s writing samples immediately and will help them share, view, and edit their writing; this item is crucial in order to bring the writing process to life. Writing is a skill they need in life and if they understand the process and are competent writers, they can be more successful in college, their careers, and their future in general; they can become efficient communicators that can contribute to those around them.

Your help will ensure that my students can have an extraordinary, unforgettable, and painless classroom experience with something we all have had a painful experience with: the writing process.
