Volleygirls

My students need 20 knee pads and 10 volleyballs for practices and games.

Inner city youths staying focused and out of trouble. My students live in a poor drug infested neighborhood without parental involvement. I teach physical education and coach volleyball after school. Our team consists of 15 sixth through eighth graders.

When my students leave school, they are faced with drugs, shootings, abuse, and lack of parental care. I stay after school everyday to give my students a safe place to succeed. Before I began coaching, the girls didn't know how to play volleyball. Now they want to practice constantly, and are feeling good about themselves. Their teachers see an improvement in grades and behavior. All they need is faith in themselves and support - which they didn't get after the 3:09 bell rang.

My volleyball girls are improving every time they step on the court; however, the knee pads will allow them to dive for the ball as professionals do. They don't understand why other schools have knee pads and uniforms (schools with a strong Home and School Association). We don't have parents that are involved enough to cheer their child on, let alone a sponsor. My girls are good, and have scraped knees to show it - I'd rather show it in other ways.

My volleyball team will be so elated if they look like true volleyball players. They are teased by their classmates for not hanging on the corner, and ignored by their parents. The girls (and in the spring boys) look forward to staying in school after school is over and practicing routines, helping each other, and becoming team players instead of fighting in the school yard or worse on the corner.
