This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Mathematics Intervention Specialist for grades K-6, at an inner city elementary school. I support teachers and students in the area of mathematics. I go into classrooms on a daily basis to model teaching and learning of mathematics. Most of my students are Hispanic, English Language Learners(ELL) and require lots of support in all subjects. Part of my job is to support students struggling with math and provide them with strategies that will help develop their mathematical thinking.

Most learners are visual learners, especially English Language Learners. I strongly feel using an overhead projector during a math lesson is a good way to help support learning in classrooms. At this time many classrooms at my school have no overhead projector and there are no funds available to purchase new overhead projectors. Now, when I go into a classroom to teach a math lesson, most times I am unable to fully implement the math program or lessons I have planned. It has become an issue for many teachers at my school.

We need overheads to provide additional support to the visual learners and English Language Learners. Our math program requires the use of overheads for developing many math concepts such as "spatial reasoning" and problem solving strategies. Students are encouraged to share their problem solving strategies with one another to further develop understanding of math concepts and mathematical thinking. As a teacher, I use the overhead in my lessons to model and demonstrate mathematical thinking. We use overhead manipulatives to explore math ideas. It's a great tool in developing a positive, nurturing, math environment. My students will benefit greatly from all the above mentioned.

You will make it possible for my students to share their mathematical thinking and strengthen their math understanding and ability to communicate their thinking through media. They will be able to focus and visually see abstract ideas introduced in math.
