I teach at a neighborhood high school in the city of Chicago.
We are a very unique school in the City of Chicago. We are a neighborhood school, which means that we do not have selective admission. We accept all students within our attendance boundary. Many of our students are recent immigrants. Seventy five percent of our student body speaks a language other than English at home. The languages in my classes alone include: Korean, Tagalog, Urdu, Farsi, Spanish, Vietnamese, Bosnian, Romanian, Polish, Greek, Chinese and Albanian.
It is not at all uncommon for a student to arrive in Chicago from a foreign country one day and be sitting in my class the next day!
We have recently started a Gay Straight Alliance at school. The GSA meets as a club after school. We are supported by our administration and most of the student body who are used to celebrating diversity and working with all different types of colleagues. The kids in the GSA are tremendous! They are energetic, intelligent, passionate, inquisitive and socially active.
We would love to make some tie dyed t-shirts to raise awareness for the club and the issues that it represents. The project itself would also be a great, bonding, team building activity for the members of the club. Please support us by helping us purchase 30 t-shirts and 2 tie dye making kits.
Thank you.
