Nonfiction Texts to Build on Student Interests

My students need 1 Nonfiction Leveled Books Classroom Library.

I am a first grade teacher in a high-need district. Our budget has been cut and we are in need of many resources. Fifty percent of my students are below grade level in reading. Many are lacking the self-confidence they need to be successful in reading, but have shown a great interest in learning about animals and other nonfiction topics.

My students have shown great interest in nonfiction texts, specifically about animals. When choosing books students are unable to find books that match their interest and their reading level. Most nonfiction texts are too challenging to read independently.

Research shows that students need an opportunity to read books at their reading level. Students also need to be motivated by high interest books. Reading nonfiction will increase motivation and vocabulary. With high stakes testing in the near future, first graders will benefit from early exposure to nonfiction texts. Our classroom needs one set of nonfiction leveled readers so that students can self-select books that are of interest to them. Students will choose books at their own level and will feel success in reading nonfiction.

With your donation, you will increase the motivation and self-confidence of many first graders. They will be exposed to a new genre at an early age that will benefit them now and in the future. Your donation will be greatly appreciated!
