Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Math to 8th graders at a public school in the inner city. Our students come from very poor families and do not have the resources that they need to empower themselves. We are a Title I school and are geographically located in an urban neighborhood that has the highest incidence of STD’s and HIV/AIDS within the teenage population of New York City. Our immediate community is plagued with illicit drug trafficking. Gang membership in the area has been a constant concern.

I want to bring the students into the 21st century way of learning. In the world of wikis, MySpace, and blogs, these students need the know-how and the technology to be able to show what they are learning in the classroom in a fun and interesting way so that they can internalize their learning. They will remember math concepts more if they are creating videos, uploading them to the Internet, and creating memories to capture their learning. The possibilities are endless!

A laptop computer can help students tap into talents and can develop interests that can turn into a career for them. They can learn how to demonstrate what they are currently learning through videos and blogging, and at the same time can develop real world skills. Their first project will be to find self-check quizzes for each of the topics we have covered and analyze the sites to see if they are correct. This uses critical thinking skills which cannot be taught as effectively without the computer. Students will be taught how to evaluate sites for reliability, how to create and publish videos to demonstrate what they are learning in class. This can help them retain the information longer for the state math test in March.

Our students are very eager to use their know-how and what they are learning to share with the world. This will keep them engaged and motivated, and we simply need a laptop to do so! Your help will ensure that the students I am honored to teach will be better equipped to handle the demands of the world by learning the skills, knowledge, and tools to succeed. Please help me equip my students with the technology and skills they need to become better learners, students, and productive members of society!
