Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We are an inner city sixth grade class where social studies always loses out to reading and math. It is always on the 'back burner.' I am trying to give social studies the come back it deserves, not only by getting the children excited about it, but by introducing them to Egypt in a creative, hands on way.

Well, at least we have books this year. However, the vast majority of my students struggle with reading on a daily basis. They are quickly turned off as soon as they are asked to take out their social studies book, which is way beyond their reading level. I'm looking to 'hook them in' by having them create their own pharaoh masks. When completed, they will then be so enthralled with their finished project, they will want to proudly display them during an Egyptian Day at our school. Hopefully this will inspire them to continue on in social studies with the other cultures of the world.

I am hoping to purchase ceramic Egyptian masks, paints and paint brushes, so the children not only can showcase their creativeness, but their individuality as well. So many things are missing from our school due to budget cuts, that what may seem like something so small, as paint and masks, would give the children such pleasure and freedom to express themselves, all while connecting to other cultures of our world.

With your help, their enthusiasm will soar, being able to not only create their own artistic masterpiece, but to proudly display it at a special Egyptian Day at our school when parents and local community members will be able to see all their hard work and dedication to learning about other cultures of the world. I can only imagine their beaming faces, full of confidence and hope for their future.
