Passion for Printing

My students need ink, paper, brayers, barens, and blocks for printmaking project.

My students represent a diverse community of artists. I teach 7th and 8th grade art in an urban school where African Americans, European Americans, Arab Americans, Asian Americans and Latino Americans from all socioeconomic and educational backgrounds come together to learn. We do have a high percentage of students receiving free and reduced lunch, students who face violence, drugs and gangs as part of their community as well as students whose parents are professors at the university up the street. In the art classroom they all come together to express their experiences visually and learn by creating with their minds and hands.

We have a slim departmental budget each year which allows for the basics of pencils, paper and tempera paint. However, when we want to explore new media and delve into more in-depth projects we have to look to outside sources for the resources. The students become extremely excited when new materials are introduced to get their hands on and experiment with. It truly gets their creative juices flowing and makes learning fun. It is a shame that the projects we are able to complete are limited by a budget of $7 per student per entire school year.

We have a grant-funded guest artist coming in April to work for two weeks co-teaching a printmaking unit. Currently, we have virtually no printmaking supplies because they are not covered by the grant amount. We need ink, blocks, brayers, barrens, and printing paper to make this project successful.

Your support of this project will give students the opportunity to learn a complex two-dimensional art process, engage with an artist in the community, and get them super-excited to create amazing artwork. For some of my students, as 7th graders, this is their first art class ever. For some they have never had art supplies at home and this would be a spark of creative possibility in their lives. For others, this will fuel an already existing passion for art, showing them the many paths it offers for creative expression. They all deserve to have a rich art curriculum with quality materials, which you can make possible. THANK YOU for considering this project!
