What's the Matter with Grams?

My students need 8 triple beam balances.

Ms. P. Troy Middle School
Troy, MO Grades 6-8

The excitement of teaching comes from watching my students do hands on labs, and being able to watch them learn the concepts and learn to think for themselves. My class is an eighth grade Science Inquiry class. Students take this class in addition to the regular eighth grade science class. We primarily do labs and hands on activities to teach the curriculum.

Students can only learn so much from classroom discussion, and reading in the textbook. They need to have practical experience with the information. Most of my students do not understand the difference between mass and weight, and many of my students have not worked with the metric system. I see a difference in test grades and skills in the lab, when they have had hands on experience working with the subject matter.

I have two triple beam balances. So I have been able to show the students what they are and how to use them, but I have not been able to give them the experience of using them, for themselves. We need to have 8 more triple beam balances so that instead of doing the demonstrations I can have the students find the mass and using that information can then find the density of an item. This can then lead to other labs about how we know if things will sink or float, and why some items stay suspended in water. Students also will gain experience of working with the metric system and with how to use lab materials.

Your help will ensure that my students have opportunities to learn through these hands on, thought provoking activities. You will make it possible for my students to not only grow in knowledge in the area of Science, but also in math, and they will have a better understanding in how science and math affects them and the world around them.
