Shaping Identity and Style through Screenprinting

My students need 7 different art supplies, such as silk screens, squeegees, drawing fluid, screen filler, and screen printing ink.

Hello there! I currently teach 9th grade Art & Media at a high school that focuses on inquiry-based curriculum. In my classroom, I focus my lessons on my students' varying learning styles in order for them to discover their creative abilities.

Although my students have the opportunity to learn a variety of art and media related techniques, the school budget does not allow for unique art methods that students can readily relate to. By this, I am referring to methods such as screenprinting, which has held a close tie to the visual culture that my students' are inundated with on a daily basis, from fashion to poster art to CD cover art. Many of my students who know my background as a screenprint artist are always very interested in the process of printing, but also have the curiosity to create a visual message.

Screenprinting, like other printmaking methods require specific materials in order to create the final image. The most important tool is of course the screen. It serves essentially as a stencil where ink is transferred from the surface, pushed through by using a squeegee, and surprise, the image is transferred to the paper or fabric! In order to make a stencil, this requires what is called drawing fluid and screen filler. Both are liquids that are painted directly on the screen that harden as they dry to make the stencil. Students can draw an image; as if painting on the screen, and once it is dry they can print until their arms are tired. There is a magical moment in screenprinting. It comes when you lay aside the squeegee and lift the screen to see that first, perfect print. Through planning, problem solving, and paying close attention to each step, a great reward reveals itself in the end! No other creative pursuit can promise that kind of thrill in abundance.

This is a time in my students' lives when they should become empowered to reveal their identity both through words and images. Screenprinting is a medium that will provide them with the agency to do this. To create their own perspective amongst the visual culture they face everyday, learning how to screenprint will provide a unique experience in developing their creative voice. Your generosity and support will ensure that my students gain skills that have the potential to change the way they view the world
