Using Musical Instruments with Storytelling

My students need 2 sets of rhythm instruments.

I am a third grade Math/Science/Social Studies teacher with many arts-integration ideas for the forty 8 and 9 year old students I am teaching this year. At home, most of my students are limited in their exposure to creative opportunities. Attending a Title-One school, the majority of my students are from a high poverty area. For many of them, school is their only safe haven. For most of them, school is the only place where their imagination is appreciated and nurtured to grow.

Although we are a Title One school, we are also an arts-infused school. Our faculty is encouraged to integrate arts opportunities like music, dance, visual arts, and storytelling into our curriculum. Storytelling is a powerful tool that can be used throughout any learning content. Whether it's the teacher telling the story or the students creating, storytelling can be used in teaching, learning, or finding out what our students have learned.

Musical instruments are useful accents to any storytelling experience. They are useful for keeping students engaged in a story. Instruments can even encourage students to tell stories just because they want to get their hands on a particular instrument. The instruments I have chosen for my classroom are both multicultural and easy to use.

When using instruments with storytelling, the possibilities are endless. With the funding of this project, my forty students will be given the opportunity to experiment with musical instruments in a learning environment. Throughout their storytelling experiences, they will practice priceless reading comprehension skills such as: reading, re-telling, and writing. You will make it possible for our future musicians, writers, and public speakers to get an early start in developing their gifts and talents.
